ORIENTER: tOwards undeRstanding and modelIng the language of mENTal health disordERs.
Funding Agency | SNSF, Switzerland. Project funded by the Swiss Programme for International Research by Scientific Investigation Teams (SPIRIT) SNSF Research Program 2024. Developed by the Idiap Research Institute, Switzerland in collaboration with CIMAT, Mexico and INPRFM, Mexico. Period: May 2025 - April 2029. Project grant number: IZSTZ0_223488/ 1.
Project type: | Research My role: (PI) Main researcher and supervisor of the involved students.
Summary: This project aims to investigate what aspects of patients’ language and behaviour can be effectively and efficiently modelled by very recent AI techniques in the diagnostic construct of depression disorders, considering relevant demographic variables such as cultural background (native language) and gender. More in particular, we aim to answer what type of knowledge, extracted from the data and those provided by the domain expert, can be exploited and infused into the learning process adding intelligibility capabilities to the generated models. The outcomes of this project will have an impact in the clinical context, where digital solutions are required to reduce the limitations of the healthcare systems of low- and mid-income countries.

Automatic Personality Traits Recognition using multimodal features.
Funding Agency | CONACyT, Mexico Project funded by the CONACyT Research Program 2015. Developed in the Information Technologies Department, Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Unidad Cuajimalpa, Mexico in collaboration with the Universidad Nacional de San Luis, Argentina. Period: May 2017 - September 2019. Project grant number: CB-2015-01-258588.
Project type: | Research My role: (PI) Main researcher, project coordinator and supervisor of the involved students.
Summary: Evaluate the impact of multimodal features in the task of Personality trait recognition. Particularly, textual features in combination with attributes extracted from the images of handwritten texts are being considered. In parallel, a large multi-modal Spanish corpus was constructed.

Period: June 2018. Project grant number: 293097.
Project type: | Science Divulgation and Communication My role: (PI) Main researcherand coordinator of the event.
Summary: To provide a training event with a global scope aiming at updating participants about the most recent advances in the critical and fast-developing area of deep learning and its impact on Natural Language Processing. All the material from this workshop can be found here
Platform of Bioinformatic Analysis for Genomic Research and Diagnosis. Phase 3: incorporation of Artificial Intelligence algorithms and analysis of structural variants.
Funding Agency | CONACyT, Mexico Project funded by the CONACyT Innovation Program (PEI-CONACyT) 2018. Developed in the Information Technologies Department, Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Unidad Cuajimalpa, Mexico in in collaboration with the industrial partner “Web and Internet and Network Technology for Enterprise Resources (WINTER) SA de CV”, Mexico. Period: Feb 2018 - January 2019. Project grant number: 253441.
Project type: | Innovation My role: (PI) Main researcher, project coordinator and supervisor of the involved students.
Summary: Development of an Information Extraction system specialized in finding clinical information associated with genetic variants in scientific papers. Natural Language Processing methods in combination with machine learning algorithms were employed.
Cloud bioinformatics platform for the identification of genetic variants, an application for molecular diagnosis and genomic research.
Funding Agency | CONACyT, Mexico Project funded by the CONACyT Innovation Program (PEI-CONACyT) 2017. Developed in the Information Technologies Department, Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Unidad Cuajimalpa, Mexico in collaboration with the industrial partner “Web and Internet and Network Technology for Enterprise Resources (WINTER) SA de CV”, Mexico. Period: Feb 2017 - January 2018. Project grant number: 242211.
Project type: | Innovation My role: (PI) Main researcher, project coordinator and supervisor of the involved students.
Summary: To develop a machine-learning approach for the identification of genetic variants with pathogenic potential. We delivered a solution for classifying a genetic mutation into two possible categories: mutation related to a certain pathology, or mutation not related to the pathology.
